The study was a qualitative examination of three, elementary student pairs writing collaborative texts. The relationships students had with their peers was an important feature of their collaborative practices. Features of mutual interaction, negotiation, and shared expertise were identifiable in the K/1 and 2 /3 partnerships. Yet, the conflicts between the 4 /5 girls demonstrated the complexity of collaborative relationships. The examples highlight the benefits and challenges of writing together.
