This study explores how one African American mother integrates literacy practices into her socialization goals for her young daughter. Using an ethnographic case study, it illustrates how contextually negotiated practices—such as affirmations, digital videos, and car ride conversations—are used to foster growth, resilience, and preparation for societal challenges. Findings highlight the richness of family practices, the role of contextualized literacy in socialization goals, and the need to shift how literacy research is explored.
