Compactness, Gerrymandering, and the Personal Vote

Brief Overview

Compactness incentivizes members of Congress to develop a personal vote. Using measures of congressional district compactness created using GIS from 1992-2012, I show that incumbents’ vote margins are higher in more compact districts.
