Centralization and Local Protectionism: Evidence from Judiciary Reform in China

Brief Overview

We study whether centralization reduces local governments’ protection for local firms. Using China’s judicial reform, we find that local firms are less likely to win after centralization, but court rulings against local firms are harder to enforce.
