The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of citations in a refutational text, specifically how the perceived credibility of a refutational science text facilitates knowledge revision and attitude change. Working from a framework of the Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model and the Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion this study explored the effectiveness of three texts on influenza on conceptual change. A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. We found refutational texts with citations are more effective at establishing credibility and inducing attitudinal change.
