The purpose of this study is to explore Chinese EFL learners' perceptions of test fairness of TOEFL iBT independent writing test and then to suggest some training strategies for future TOEFL iBT writing part. Based on the current literature search, no studies have been done as a qualitative inquiry or used only Chinese EFL learners as participants. Without the approval from IRB at Ohio University yet, a pilot interview with one similar participant was done. The preliminary results showcased that the topics of TOEFL iBT independent writing test were basically not beyond Chinese EFL learners' understanding; the test format of using keyboard did not impact the scores; the writing rubrics provided by ETS proved to be effective for test preparation. However, for the interpretation of the writing test scores was still under more justification.
