Assessment of Academic Support Initiatives for Academically Underprepared Students

Fri, October 26, 2:50 to 4:00pm, Kingsgate Conference Center, Mt. Adams (Room 111)

Abstract

Various studies have shown the importance of Student Support Services in first year college success and retention rates. In most colleges and universities, Student Support Services (SSS) take different forms such as academic advising, tutoring, mentoring, academic coaching, etc. Effective SSS provide the platform for students to get involved and integrated into campus life. This study provides a preliminary analysis of an academic support intervention and programmatic activities developed by West Chester University of Pennsylvania for its academically under prepared students. Preliminary findings of the study show that students who participated in the program increased their first term cumulative credits compared to those who did not participate in the program. Participants of the program also increased their overall cumulative GPA. The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate the various interventions being implemented by the university while showcasing their success during the two years of implementation.
