Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggle with their inability to attend cultural events with their children. Sensory Friendly Theatre, sometimes referred to as relaxed performance theatre, includes traditional theatre conventions that are altered to accommodate the needs of individuals with ASD. The purpose of the study is to investigate the experiences of families and caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder at a Sensory Friendly theatre performance at a local high school. The theoretical framework for this study is the Social Competence framework. This study will be a mixed-methods study, using an advocacy lens. The quantitative portion of the study will be a one-shot case study design, while the qualitative portion of the study will be a phenomenological study. Three instruments will be used for this study, a Post-Show survey, an Observation Checklist, and with a follow-up interview protocol. This is a Research in Progress proposal. As such, data collection and analysis are in progress.
