This presentation offers a duo-ethnographic account of three education faculty members’ exploration of their professional, cultural, and communal identities. Presenters will share how they converged as colleagues in the intersectionality of their diverse identities to find professional support, purpose, and unity. The presenters will share excerpts for their unique stories, which revealed common themes of cultural typecasting, marginalization, resilience, and success.
The presenters will highlight their educational experiences, personal awakenings around anti-racist/anti-bias teaching for social justice and equity. The presenters espouse the position that advancements in the scholarship of teaching that focus on teacher self-making are an essential part of preparing culturally conscious and responsive educators. The presenters will explain why they feel that it is imperative for faculty members in higher education to invest in collective self-reflection prior to launching school-wide initiatives to embark upon social justice and equity work in public schools.
