Sarah Josepha Hale: An Activist Constrained

Abstract

This study examined how the beliefs and writings of Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, exemplify the ideas of hegemony and the simultaneous opposite. Hale’s writings published in her magazine and books about education, women’s advancement, and women’s work were studied. Analysis found examples of the dialectical tension resistance /| oppression in her beliefs and arguments concerning women’s education, women’s advancement, and women’s work.
