This study examined how the beliefs and writings of Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godeys Ladys Book, exemplify the ideas of hegemony and the simultaneous opposite. Hales writings published in her magazine and books about education, womens advancement, and womens work were studied. Analysis found examples of the dialectical tension resistance /| oppression in her beliefs and arguments concerning womens education, womens advancement, and womens work.
