Educational (Civic) Engagement in Standards Reform: Quick Action to Save K-12 Speaking, Listening, and Media Literacy in Minnesota

Thu, November 17, 3:30 to 4:45pm, Sheraton, Beacon A

Abstract

Two years ago the state of Minnesota almost lost oral communication standards during the political shift from the Profile of Learning. This battle inspired this author’s conceptualization of educational engagement, a spin-off of civic engagement for the communication pedagogy class in teacher training. While important in preparing college graduates for the future, goals of civic engagement should also be directly tied to programs of study. This paper highlights one specific area of educational involvement, standards reform, and presents a case study of educational engagement. In the final portion of this paper, the concept of educational engagement is further defined.
