'We Need Them and They Need Us': Providing a Framework for Adjunct Instruction

Abstract

I was the Chair of the Communication Department at Del Mar College for over 10 years. Three years ago, the Department enlarged adding additional disciplines. Even though I relinquished that position, I have served as the Speech Coordinator ever since. During this time period I have created and implemented a number of practices for adjuncts in our discipline. to aid in their classroom instruction and to maintain discipline standards. Some of those practices are: survival information, discipline course guidelines, a custom school-specific activity book, a “gift” session for all faculty, submission (by each faculty member every semester) of sample “A” student speeches on video, speech criteria evaluation utilizing videotaped speeches, and classroom observation.
