The Changing Face of Medical Journal Advertisements: How the Portrayals of Race and Gender Have Evolved Over the Last Ten Years

Abstract

To determine how the portrayals of adults in medical journal advertisements have changed over the last ten years, a random sample of journals was subjected to a content analysis. Significant increases were found in the portrayals of females and minorities while significant decreases were found in the portrayals of males and males as consumers/ patients. In addition, females were found to represent greater than their fair share of mental health and pain medication advertising.
