Abstract

The proposal of a surprising theory, the Danger Model, that contradicts immunological dogma has caused a controversy among medical experts. The scientific ethos of the author, Polly Matzinger, as an iconoclast is central to the debate. This paper examines the contention that Matzinger deliberately exploits her reputation to force acceptance of her model and to push the boundaries of this medical field, but her unconventional rhetorical approach may hinder this acceptance.
