This paper proposes that mutual understanding is a procedural achievement in the interaction between native speaker and nonnative speaker. The goal is to explicate the manners in which NS and NNS manage understanding troubles. Following the conversation analytical approach, this paper provides an in-depth study of two dyadic conversations conducted respectively by a nonnative teaching assistant with her two American college students. The analyses here displayed that mutual understanding could be procedurally accomplished.
