Indian Elections 2004: A Case of Voters’ Rejection of Mediated Reality

Sat, November 19, 5:00 to 6:15pm, Marriott, Northeastern

Abstract

The paper is an attempt to explain the results of the Indian elections, held in May 2004, in the light of Chomsky’s Propaganda analysis and Gerbner’s Cultivation theory. It is a participant observation study and analysis of how media operate with in the frameworks of entrenched power structures that work to eliminate dissent and silence minority opinions and how provisions within the framework of society such as the power of vote can sometimes challenge these equations.
