Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion
Current research on interracial communication suggests the need to move theories about race into the practical realm of real life contexts. The goal of this proposal is to provide a platform for scholarly interrogation of the salience of race in the following contexts: (1) scholars of color and the influence their racialized identities have on their ascription to third wave feminism; (2) understandings of whiteness is relation to undergraduate students; (3) racial awareness as experienced through role-play in the college classroom; and (4) mediated constructions of interracial romantic relationships in film. More specifically, the scholarship evidenced on this panel will demonstrate how the practical application of theories about interracial communication will prepare scholars and the lay public to deal will the reality of race and its role in shaping our realities in an increasingly diverse society.
