Building and Testing Communication and Social Support Theory: Implications for Community-based Interventions

Sat, November 19, 12:30 to 1:45pm, Marriott, MIT

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

The complexity of today’s health care crisis provides an impetus for interpersonal communication research to help inform the development of communication based interventions and to mobilize resources comprised of strong/weak ties. This panel employs a multi-methodological approach to help craft viable outreach programs, while also building and testing theory. The relationships among strong/weak ties, uncertainty management, communication competence, social support, as well as coping are examined across online, chronic illness, and transitional contexts.
