Abstract

This paper examines theoretical presuppositions in discourse emerging from higher education regarding the relationship between colleges, universities, and “the public” and argues that higher education scholars and others concerned with this relationship have much to gain by viewing “the public” through the lens of multiplicity rather than as a single entity outside colleges and universities.
