According to the UN Report on the State of the Worlds Cities for the first time in history the majority of the worlds population lives in cities. But the state of the city is a precarious one as it faces serious challenges from a number of internal and external sources 1) The impact of suburbanization; 2) Balkanization; 3) Corporatization; 4) Gentrification; 5) Communication technologies. This seminar will explore these themes by examining: a) The City As Medium; b) The City Defined by Media; c) The City as community.
