“We Worship an Awesome God in the Blue States”: God and Faith in Democratic Political Campaigning

Abstract

This panel spotlights the diversity of communication about faith, religion, and God by Democratic office-seekers and office-holders past and present. Supporting Barack Obama’s (2004) claim that “We worship an awesome God in the blue states,” our presentations provide an historical overview of religion in Democratic campaigning; explore religious communication in recent races; analyze faith-related rhetoric in an ongoing presidential nomination campaign; and assess the contributions of the “religious left” to Democratic political strategizing.
