In the internet age, the limitations of traditional immediacy conceptualizations and instruments are apparent as communication technologies supplement and/or substitute for face-to-face interactions. This panel will review research that elaborates a new framework of affiliative communication that encompasses face-to-face and mediated forms as well as verbal and nonverbal forms, introduce a new affiliation measure, and share results from field tests of the framework in a variety of instructional contexts.
