Session Submission Summary

Innocuous Identities?: Symbols and Celebrities as Techniques for Containing Difference

Sun, November 18, 11:00am to 12:15pm, Palmer House, Floor: Third Floor, Salon 3

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

This panel examines how serious questions of identity and difference are
diverted, contained and/or opened up by shifting them to sites that are
often considered frivolous or irrelevant (for instance, toys, celebrity
scandal, and Hollywood entertainment). Though not in itself new, this process takes on
particular importance in the context of overt efforts to “unify”
or “normalize” American culture around a straight, white, masculine
ideal.
