Session Submission Summary

(Man)aging Grief, Family Business, Babies, and Equine Relations: Applications of a Feminist Communicology for Gender, Work, & Organization Studies

Sun, November 18, 8:00 to 9:15am, Chicago Hilton, Floor: Fourth Floor, Conference Room 4D

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

Panel participants take up Ashcraft and Mumby’s (2004) “feminist communicology of organization” in response to a variety of contemporary social issues largely woven around the problematic distinction between public/work and private/home arenas of life. Panelists consider an array of organizational types including a not-for-profit, therapeutic organization as well as family businesses, to organizational policies on bereavement and parental leave. In doing so, each panelist “re-works gender” by exploring the active co-construction of gender and organization, as well as its implications for theory, practice, and the feminist goal of social change.
