Abstract

This panel is an engagement with Kenneth Burke’s theory of “equipment for living” and how this notion operates within various historical, political, social, and cultural moments. Ranging from the study of disaster films to popular music, panelists will extend Burke’s theory not only to include popular cultural texts, but also to critically analyze how the notion of equipment for living functions within society in both the past and the present.
