Communication Ethics in the Informed Consent Process for Pediatric Oncology Research

Abstract

Ethical approaches to informed consent in pediatric research must address the communication challenges inherent in these emotional and cognitively challenging interactions. We report the work of our multi-disciplinary research group that focuses on contributions that communication scholars make in this area, including development of a multi-media tool to support informed consent, an examination of the rhetorical construction of agency in discussions about informed consent, and the communication challenges to informed consent in a developing country.
