This essay critically examines the press coverage of the first lady institution from 1964 to 1977, arguing that journalistic framing of first ladies during this era mirrored the cultural climate, especially in relation to womens place in society. Even though coverage of the feminist movement in the mainstream media from 1963 1980 was often negative, newspaper and magazine coverage of first ladies reflected feminist sensibilities and often promoted feminist ideals during this same time period.
