Communicating Globalization: An Analysis of Japanese Governmental and Public Discourses on Globalization

Fri, November 16, 3:30 to 4:45pm, Chicago Hilton, Floor: Fifth Floor, Conference Room 5E

Abstract

In January 2000, a Japanese governmental report recommended that English be established as an official language of Japan to deal with globalization. Focusing on this specific globalization context, this study analyzes how globalization is communicated in the governmental report and general public opinions posted on a Japanese newspaper website in response to the controversial proposal. Also through examining connections and disconnections of the two discourses, the author attempts to explore implications for international/cultural communication.
