Thirty years after its inception, theorists continue to overlook aspects of the spiral of silence theory. This paper argues for perspective changes on the spiral of silence that may guide future research, including consideration of alternative explanations for silenced voices, clearer conceptual definitions, and more cultural studies to ensure those world views are heard. Scholars considering these perspectives will not only provide new insight into the spiral of silence, but into communication theory in general.
