Ordinary conversation is systematically organized by reference to the speakersÂ’ orientation to coordinating actions. This paper demonstrates that stance is another critical facet that organizes conversation. Speakers in Japanese conversation use final particles to coordinate relative stances about an issue, which influences the shape of sequence organization independent of action coordination. This perspective allows us to recognize interactional motivation that underlies the distribution of Japanese particles.
