Communicating Views of War: Constructing and Mobilizing Meanings of War

Thu, November 15, 12:30 to 1:45pm, Palmer House, Floor: Third Floor, Salon 4

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

War is a paradox. In public argument, war is both, in Kenneth Burke’s words, “the ultimate disease of cooperation,” and Clausewitz’s “continuation of policy by other means.” How policymakers, and the publics they represent, argue about war has profound implications for how military force is used and justified, both nationally and throughout the world. This panel considers the communication of world views in terms of the public arguments that surround war.
