Ethnography as a Site of Contested Meaning

Fri, November 16, 11:00am to 12:15pm, Chicago Hilton, Floor: Lower Level, Northwest 5

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

The most important practice in which we can engage as Communication scholars is to discuss our practices and what those practices say about who we are. This panel encourages that discussion. Panelists will present papers that call into question certain practices currently included under the label of ethnography and, in addition, at times call for additional expansion of how we define what it is that we do as ethnographers. And perhaps most central to our standing as Communication scholars, this panel tackles the difficult question of what we as ethnographers trained as Communication scholars should see as the focus of our ethnographic endeavors.
