Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion
Many late modern philosophers such as Bakhtin, Buber, and Levinas locate the foundation of human ethical being on the bedrock of a pre-ontology ground of communication. Communication demands approach even before the limen, extends a saying before the said, and requires acknowledgment and listening before care.
In recent years a number of communication scholars as well have worked to understand the implications of such thoughts for those of us in our profession. Very recently and most notably, Michael Hyde probed deeply into the call of conscience and acknowledgment. Lisbeth Lipari defined and refined listening as an experience in the depths of awareness of the other. Spoma Jovanonic and Roy Wood investigated the saying deep within the ruins of the World Trade Center.
This panel explores acknowledgment, listening and the resiliency to keep on acknowledging and listening in the context of communication ethics.
