Cotillion: NCA Debuts

Abstract

Viewing job search rituals as cotillions complicates and reframes doctoral candidates' presentations as future faculty members. Business cards replace roses; dance cards slot party appearances. The grooming process heightens, plucking and girdling job talks and research statements. Advisors escort candidates, who conform performances for a privileged society. Audiences fawn while junior debutantes (i.e., graduate colleagues) wait in the wings. This presentation examines NCA "debuts" and the implications for academic socialization and our field.
