The Rhetorical Construction of the Post-9/11 U.S. Citizen

Sat, November 22, 6:30 to 7:45pm, Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: Third Level, Del Mar A

Abstract

I will analyze the post-9/11 rhetoric of President George W. Bush. First, I will expand on the discussion of the intrinsic role of language in the social construction of reality and, consequently, the formation of nationalism and citizenship; Second, I will discuss Altheide’s (2006) concept of “the politics of fear”; and third, using ideological and feminist critique, I will highlight the various ways in which U.S. citizens are socially constructed by President Bush’s rhetoric.
