The Alhambra project: Building a sustainable community through the re-localization of news in Alhambra, Los Angeles County

Abstract

This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities identified by the authors as they try to develop a local news product that will facilitate civic engagement in Alhambra, home to many new immigrants from Asia and Latin America. In this paper, we outline our findings on the current levels of civic participation of Alhambra residents and the potential opportunities for connecting our planned news product to the residents and community organizations to stimulate civic engagement. The form of this local news product will be developed based on discussions with local residents and community organizations about the communication channels they find accessible and most appropriate for this purpose. In doing so, we hope to make this project truly participatory and self-sustaining.
