Indirectness, Opinion, and Generalization: The Process of Talking Gender in the Military

Abstract

In this study I use grounded theory to investigate the unique experiences of four female service members. The process of negotiating negative messages about gender emerged from the data using theoretical sampling and core categories (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Glaser, 1978). Grounded theory analysis of the data shows that female service members use the ideas of opinion, generalization, and perception to manage negative messages regarding women in the military.
