Improving Cross-cultural Connections: Implications for Diversity Training

Wed, November 17, 11:00am to 12:15pm, Hilton San Francisco, Floor: Sixth Floor, Tower 3, Sutter B

Abstract

This paper explores how diverse people make connections with each other and how can Training & Development promote these connections among trainees during and beyond the training. More specifically, in this age of globalization everyone will have to live close to and work in teams with people that may speak a different language, have a different religion, culture, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. It becomes imperative then to find ways that co-workers can communicate with each other and find and build on their commonalities.
This paper will cover five basic aspects that enhance the ability of people to form connections with others and specifically in the process of training they can help diverse people establish clear connections. These are: establishing clear goals, limits and objectives, teaching cross-cultural communication skills, leading by example, recognizing differences but focusing on similarities and finally, establishing reward systems to reinforce the new behaviors. This process must begin in the training session where the trainer will be able to model it, guide it and encourage it and continue in every day work life. Systems, that must be in place in order for this training to work long term, will also be discussed.
