This paper explores urban debate leagues as locations for the enactment of citizenship. Analysis is drawn from the perspective of Robert Asen’s (2004) discourse theory of citizenship. Elements of urban debate leagues are examined for their potential to invite instances of enacted citizenship in students. The paper concludes that urban debate empowers students by inviting them to engage in citizenship through generative processes and balancing risk and commitment.
