Using Richard Rorty’s differentiation between systematic and edifying philosophy, I identify how most approach Burke in a systematic manner. I argue that a more accurate reading may be achieved by aligning Burke with the edifying philosophers. Finally, I address the implications of approaching Burke from this viewpoint, particularly for rhetorical scholars who have adopted Burke as a figurehead, and how seeing Burke as an edifying philosopher may open up the field of rhetorical analysis.
