Internet-based news aggregators have allowed news site users to play a direct role in the editorial process of selecting stories for prominence on the news agenda. While technology enthusiasts have celebrated the new powers afforded to news site users, I argue that bringing the logic of voting or consumer choice deeper into the editorial process is not enough to guarantee an adequate solution to the problem of creating journalism that best serves democratic society.
