The Intersection of Racism, Social Support Groups and Small Group Communication: A Fantasy Theme Analysis of The Color of Fear

Sun, November 14, 12:30 to 1:45pm, Hilton San Francisco, Floor: 4th Floor, Tower 3, Union Square 16

Abstract

This paper uses fantasy theme analysis to explore the discussion of racism within the social support group setting of the documentary film The Color of Fear. This essay examines the group discussions’ fantasy themes and how those themes reveal the group’s shared worldview. This paper argues that this worldview involves members variably belonging to an in-group disadvantaged by white hegemony and an out-group privileged by white hegemony relative to the individual’s race and discussion context.
