Negotiations and Limitations of Copyright: Japanese Manga Scanlation and Publishers' Protection of Distribution

Abstract

Manga fans calling themselves scanlators (scan + translators) have been spreading English translations of manga on the Internet for a bit longer than publishers have been investing the resources in publishing manga legally. I will examine the nature of copyright and manga circulation in the US. The manga industry both denounces and embraces the practice, lacking the resources to stop the practice if they wished.
