This paper examines both the possibilities of and problems with creating core or basic classes specifically designed for performing arts majors and minors. The paper explains how different theoretical and pedagogical approaches are both obstacles and advantages to the development of such classes. In the end, it argues that such classes can be opportunities for new learning pathways that bridge the divide between freshman requirements and the special aspects of performing arts programs.
