The Practice of Care as Radical Consciousness

My paper will discuss the work of Toronto’s Black radical feminist queer activists in the 80’s and their “practice of care” as radical consciousness that insisted on the liveability of Black women and Black queer women in the Canadian diaspora. This form of radical consciousness has created opportunities for cross-racial solidarity and protests more recently. For example, this form of practice characterized BLM-TO’s 2016 occupation of the Toronto Police Headquarters to protest the dismissal of charges in the shooting death of Andrew Loku.
