Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Mother-Daughter Relationships, Black and White, and their role in Intergenerational Feminism and Liberty

Thu, Oct 26, 4:00 to 5:15pm, Hilton, Floor: 1st Floor, Ruth

Abstract

This paper looks at inter-generational, Black and white feminisms to argue that feminist movements are built on mother-daughter relationships. 2023 marks 100 years since ratification of the nineteenth amendment the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first proposed to Congress. Women made immense sacrifices to achieve this. While we struggle in the present, we gain insight and important background by looking at historical efforts and problems. Historical texts, in this case by women such as Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell, testify not only to the absence but the operation of a feminist intersectional framework.
