Thu, October 17, 1:30 to 3:00pm, Sheraton SLC Hotel, Powder Mountain-Solitude

Abstract

Brooklyn Historical Society’s “Muslims in Brooklyn” is a multidisciplinary project that draws on a collection of over 50 oral history interviews with Muslim Brooklynites to produce a series of public programs, arts exhibitions, educational curricula, and online resources. It represents a coordinated effort between multiple departments at Brooklyn Historical Society to strategically engage with the public and to boost exposure for the narratives collected and preserved in the oral history interviews. This paper presents a model for how oral histories can be used effectively and holistically by an organization to strengthen public outreach, education, and development.
