This poster outlines a critique of mathematics education research in relationship to whiteness and corporate capitalism. I interrogate three ideas that are “common sense” (Gramsci, 1971) to mathematics education research. First is the imaginary of the “urban child” apart from the imagined “white social body” and deemed in need of reform by way of school mathematics (Martin, 2013; Popkewitz, 2006; Leonardo & Hunter, 2007). Second is the scientific and moral authority of mathematics education researchers to decide what types of pedagogy benefit the “urban child”. Third is that mathematics education reform should be linked to profitable structures for top-down administration.
