Strategy-based computational approaches are emphasized in curriculum and teaching resources in Canada. Yet, efforts to communicate the value of these approaches to parents have faltered, leaving parents uncertain how to support their children. Through a phenomenographic analysis of parents’ experiences of learning mathematics and perspectives of current curriculum, we investigated parents’ perceptions of curriculum change in mathematics. We identified two categories of mutual concerns between parents and educators that offer a starting place for conversation: (1) opportunities for students to reach learning goals related to problem solving and computational fluency; and (2) adequate supports for students to reach goals.
