Access to higher education in the United States continues to improve, yet many minority student groups have not seen an improvement in academic success. As such, many universities offer student support services to address student success. At the University of Maryland, the Academic Achievement Program (AAP) serves as both an alternate admissions board and a transitional program for incoming students who may need additional administrative and academic support. In this research, we present an ethnographic case study of AAP students’ beliefs and attitudes about mathematics based on in-depth interviews with faculty and students, direct observation, and participant observation.
